IVF: Silent Struggle and Lack of Support
A synthesis of 19 qualitative studies involving 503 women explored the emotional, psychological, and social impacts of infertility and IVF treatment.
The Main Concerns Women Faced During Treatment:
- Emotional Isolation: Many women felt emotionally cut off, misunderstood by family or friends.
- Lack of Psychological Support: Inadequate emotional care from fertility staff was a recurring theme.
- Poor Communication: Care was often seen as clinical and dismissive of emotional needs.
- Normalization of Disappointment: Failures were downplayed, increasing emotional distress.
- Lack of Individualized Care: Women felt their personal experiences were ignored by the system.
“Women described their experience as a ‘silent grief’ – a deep and painful loss that is rarely talked about and often unseen or unrecognized by others.”
The research emphasizes the need for more empathy, personalized care, and psychological support for women undergoing infertility treatment.
