A Key concerns reported by patients

  • Emotional isolation: feeling unseen, misunderstood, or silenced by others.
  • Insufficient psychological support: limited access to counselling or continuity of care.
  • Clinical communication only: information without empathy; emotions dismissed.
  • “Normalising” disappointment: setbacks downplayed, distress intensified.
  • Lack of individualised care: one-size-fits-all protocols ignore personal context.

B What patients say helps

  • Routine screening for distress and easy referral to counselling.
  • Validation of feelings; clear, compassionate explanations at each step.
  • Continuity with a named contact or nurse navigator.
  • Realistic expectations: risks, limits, and uncertainties discussed upfront.
  • Partner inclusion and access to peer support groups.
“Many women described a silent grief — a deep, ongoing loss that is rarely talked about and often unrecognised, especially when care focuses only on procedures.”

C Clinic checklist (patient-centred)

  • Train staff in empathetic communication and trauma-informed care.
  • Offer opt-out counselling (not just on request).
  • Provide written after-visit summaries and realistic next-step plans.
  • Signpost peer support and crisis resources.

D For patients & partners

  • Ask for a named contact at your clinic.
  • Bring a support person or use notes to track questions.
  • Seek counselling early; distress is common and treatable.
  • Connect with peer communities to reduce isolation.
